It’s a long drop. Night toward day
where mother waits, that first love
and commander. How deeply does
an animal dream? On jump day
she calls to earth. Thirty feet up
day-old hatchlings launch on small nerve;
untrained experts of resistance
they shape the air they cannot fly:
passage from night, anti-plummet—
a dream dispersing? Gravity
met half way, molecules flicked back,
air flow trimmed, webs and winglets bent,
sky divers shaping free fall. Drag,
to survivable speed—under
a minute, clutch of twelve down safe.
Watchman what of the night? Nestling,
sleeping, the watery night where
instinct rises and never sets.
The wood duck, a dabbling kind, nips
sedge, water lily. Ducklings can
walk on pads. A plunge unmanaged
would crack the sound barrier, hit
leaf mold like slamming on concrete.
The beaver pond—still. Outlandish
in his pied coats the drake swivels
a red eye, feathers aglow in
emerald flames, cobalt flames, sky
a summer cauldron of sunrise
on the marsh, perching nests in trees,
dappled water, a soft landing.
