Consider the Northern Dusky Slug—
doubt you ever have, except to say “ew”—
never have camouflage stripes moved
so slowly as it slimes across the arm
of the Adirondack chair riding its
ancient ocean wave secreted
from rippling foot. The Dusky
differs from other Arions in the yellow
orange body mucus in case you
haven’t noticed, nor does it
contract into a bell shape when
stimulated, so don’t even try.
A shell less terrestrial mollusk,
would we trust this world as we
go about so naked? The pneumostome
blow hole sucks the burning air
into the long tube of its single lung,
a sleeve of thick viscous breathing.
It’s been slugging along this way
for Millennia, one on a dead dinosaur’s
ass and now on the arm of this chair—
just another rotting log as far
as it’s concerned. Slow and steady
wins the race in the land of decay
and rebirth from the primordial muck
we keep our distance from at the edge
of the trees along the swamp waiting to fall.
