Common Green Darner · Horseshoe Pond

Dance of the Green Darners

X
by Marion Boyer

Half my head is eyes
so I see you behind me

whizzing to capture a gnat.
I whir and you whip near.

Thirty thousand facets
of your green eyes fasten on me.

You hover, glassy wings fanning,
thorax beating. The turquoise

of your abdomen dazzles.
I offer my head to your clasp

and in tandem we wing
through sheen and shadow,

skimming water, skimming air
until I swing my tail up,

curl to grasp your bright blue
in the basket of my legs.

We hold each other in the wheel
and the world spins

blueandgreen until I forget
any history before you.
