Damsels of the pond

X
by
Lindsay Barba

Damsels of the pond,
they say.
But we are the few who dare
to arrive first
at earliest sign of spring,
and carry on till hardest frost,
to be caught
waterside
perching upon
stems, twigs
in search of
our one love,
hearts as large
as the hawks
we once rivaled
in size.

We’ve warmed over
since those pre-
historic times.
Our radiant nymph bodies
born in a blaze of orange,
withering into powder
blue as our skin
dries in the high Ohio
summer sun, split
open at the head
to reveal
our muted hue.

Do not misconstrue
our name,
our soft bodies,
for innocence.
Instead, watch
closely—as we lurk,
wait
for our prey
and do a favor for
you hikers,
who confuse us for
our fire-breathing brethren,
devouring
the dreaded mosquito’s head
in one bite.
