Damselflies · Buckeye Trail

Not all damsels are in distress

X
by Ken Tomaro

some might say
a damselfly is just a dragonfly in disguise
both have wings
and both have eyes
some might say
what a curious looking creature
with a stick-like body
and shattered glass wings
living in bogs, lakes, and ponds
waking up in the spring
buzzing through the days
of a blue-green sky
in what looks like a coffee addled rage

while you and I are drudging away
year after year
damselflies live fast and die young
two weeks, that’s it
a lifetime in just a few short days
but I imagine they accomplish so much more
than the rest of us,
having been here for almost 300 million years

tiny dive-bombers, intersecting the skies
and what better way to see the world
than with great pearls for eyes
