at the foot of my grandmother’s garden bed
hidden in wild mint and the remains of last years
azaleas i find you
with the setting sun reflecting the shine on your belly as
yellow as the dandelion heads i’ve rubbed on my arm your
verdant armor could not shield you as you treat yourself to
slugs and earthworms, all the pests scurrying
through cattails guarding the creek
it’s minutes before i know you’re dead
and your life slithering through weeds
in the garden is over before the ripple in the water finds the
shore
